[Midwinter] Battle Between Casters by Deus-Nocte [Midwinter] Battle Between Casters by Deus-Nocte
EDIT
Gaaaaah I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS GOT A DD BUT THANK YOU SO MUCH. Thanks to everyone for their favs, comments, and general interest, you are all AWESOME!!

This page here is from my graphic novel, Midwinter, which my bestie ~J-Cleo and I have been working on for a couple years now. The first chapter is scheduled for release in early November and to be debuted at Anime Nebraskon--but until then, my gallery has a few goodies if you want to learn more about the characters!

Again, thanks so much to everyone for the feedback, and especially to ^rydi1689 for featuring me!! DFTBA everyone!

~*~

Sooo, I really wanted to enter the "Train Your Brain" contest with a graphic novel page, but didn't really have any that were recent or good enough (in my eyes) so I picked a page from our revamped pilot of Midwinter! I would've felt wrong not entering one at all, seeing as it's what I want to do with my life. Changed the category to what it should be, since the contest is over!

Nox is facing off against the hospital's resident Abjurer, Garrett Walters. I wonder how they'll fare against each other...? :)

This page provided a lot of challenges--most of them, ironically, in the last stages of it. (Toning and onward) It took me the better portion of... *looks at clock* 9 hours for just that stage 8D;; But now that I have a better handle on how to tackle those issues, I hope it'll be smoother when I actually do the pages.

Overall, while I hope I'll be able to use this in the final version, it may end up being another test/experiment... but it's very close to what you'll be seeing in the finished product, I think!

I don't know if I'm entirely happy with how it came out, but I'm hoping I'm just being too hard on myself. :iconlazycryplz: I guess we'll see. Wish me luck in the contest!

:facebook: You'll see more art sooner at Midwinter's Facebook page! :)

Wow. A comic page that had words on it actually got a DD! I almost thought that words made one's comics ineligible for that!
This is awesome, by the way.

Thank you though! Glad you like it.

My comic will have magic in it too, and I am inspired by this. But not to copy! I have my own thing to do.

And I'm glad you used the word "trend" in your reply, because, now that I think of it, I did see another "wordie" get a DD. heh

I bet you would know. I wonder what kind of system of magic you've built, but I'm afraid to look too deeply into it, lest I be afraid to copy it. But I did really look at a number of your other pieces, because you're such a good and interesting artist, the this guy who appears to be your main OC here really looks like something awesome. He can do everything from kick ass and use magic, to bake cookies and share scarves. All while being epic manly.8-) wow

Haha, well I'm sure there will be a day I release all of our notes in a supplemental book. ;) So you'll get to see its construction there for sure! We're developing a "spell book" for every character, too. :)

I'm really glad you like Nox, and especially in all the different situations I throw him in. If I'm successful in doing that and retaining his manliness--as you put it--I'm a happy camper. :XD: So thank you very much!

If you made that book I would totally want to read it! Although I probably wouldn't be able to buy it... ._. And you know what's even better? I wouldn't want to copy it! I have my own system!:dummy:
I know I keep mentioning copying and not copying a bunch... I'm just being honest. Artists influence each other a lot, right? But when does "influenced" become too much? A lot of the time I'm worried about reading comics I admire because I don't want them to influence me too much, and I like to do parodies of popular things, and I want some people's work to be off-limits for stuff like that.

Well, I guess the notes you were talking about weren't just for magic... but having a spell list for every character would be epic too. It'd feel just like something from a video game, just because you did that. I can't remember ever seeing a detailed list of spells by character for anything other than a video game. I bet the spells would all have cool names too! Names that aren't even all mentioned explicitly in your comics? Nox didn't say the name of that chains/Locking spell, and just said on this page it's a "low level" spell. 8-)

Hey!
I just realized something! You're a female!:dummy::dummy::iconbummiesplz: lol.
I... didn't think that...^^; Well, I never said "dude", so no harm was done!:dummy: Reading is important, but trying not to read too much of your work like I said, I was right about to get to the point where I was saying too many words without reading! :XD: But then, just before I said anything worse, at the last second it hit me: "Reading is fundamental!" -Remember that quote? :D And then, just like in a movie, I dramatically read at the last second to avoid being stupid! :happybounce:

Anyway, I'm using too many words here ( :iconwalloftextplz: ), so I think I'll stop now :stupidme: and look at another deviation or two of yours. I wanna go Comment on that sculpture I swear I saw in your Slideshow... :sprint:

Honestly there's no surefire way to not be influenced by works you admire, and really you shouldn't be scared of it either! Our influences usually come from multiple sources, so they tend to mix together in a new way anyway. As long as you don't outright copy anyone or can recognize when an aspect of your comic is too close to another work, you should be fine. Just remember that nothing is original; it's your spin on it that will make it cool. Even I'm aware of my influences and can see some parallels. I'm happy to hear you developed your own system though!

Yup, we have a whole "tab" dedicated to information about magic, where it comes from, any science behind it, the schools, education system, etc. in addition to a spell list for each character. But no, Nox isn't one of those that declares his attacks :P That's something that stays more with shonen characters I think.

Lol, yes I'm a girl. I would've figured it was more or less apparent in my speech, but it isn't always. :D And thanks for checking out more of my gallery!

I was looking through random deviations and saw this. Awesome. Im about to go look through the rest of your gallery but i have some questions. Where would it be available to buy? For this one page in all how long did it take to do?(I know you said 9 hours for the toning stage (which is more dedication than i put to anything) but im thinking of making an anime/comic in the distant future so i just wanted to know normal times for pages). Finally...what is a DD?

Thank you very much! I'd be happy to answer. :)

Midwinter is going to be sold by the chapter online, via places like Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and probably some other venue (like a downloadable PDF). When there are enough chapters to make a volume, we're going to compile them into a book for printing and selling. Those will also be available online, but hopefully we can get some book stores to carry them as well. The pilot, or first chapter, has a release date of November 1st and will be about 2 chapters worth (70ish pages).

I'd assume this took me a total of 15 hours or so, but it was a few months ago so I can't be sure. Creating a comic is a very time consuming process, on all fronts. If you're doing a webcomic that updates weekly with a page or something, it's not so bad, but if you want a dedicated schedule with chapter releases, you need a lot more resources. You want things written in advance and you have to work at getting really, really fast at what you do. It's also almost impossible to do alone unless you have a ton of free time and energy. It's really hard to say the timeframe that a comic page should take, but I know it doesn't improve without practice (though I'd say about a page a day is ideal--sounds easier than it is).

Even if you want to start something in the future, don't wait! Develop a shorter story and start now, get that experience. I've heard many comic artists say that the first 200 pages they put out were shit, so it's best to get past that asap. :)

DD stands for "Daily Deviation". It's a site-wide showcase of works hand picked by the community that aren't necessarily popular, but show a lot of skill or bring awareness to a message. (ideally) Deviants note their suggestions to the people who oversee each category, and they're chosen from there. It's one of those honors that's arguably tiered higher than being on the front page. :)

Of course! I personally just make a new layer, set it to multiply, and use the pen tool. Just have to make the brush bigger. :) I also use the pen tool for lineart.

Also, no problem for the reply, I'm happy to help! And I'm glad you think I deserve the DD :D
